Linode vs DigitalOcean Pricing and DigitalOcean vs Linode Real Monthly Cost
Linode and DigitalOcean charge the same for shared servers from 2 GB to 8 GB: $12, $24 and $48 a month. Linode is cheaper on outbound traffic past the allowance ($0.005 against $0.01 per GB), dedicated CPU ($36 against $42 for 2 vCPU and 4 GB) and load balancers ($10 against $12). DigitalOcean is slightly cheaper on small managed databases ($15.15 against $16). For an ordinary web app the monthly bill is within a dollar or two; for traffic heavy or CPU bound apps, Linode costs less.
Skip the manual setup. DeployManage provisions your server and ships zero-downtime deploys on any cloud.
Get startedLinode, now sold as Akamai Cloud, and DigitalOcean price their everyday servers almost identically. A 2 GB shared server is $12 a month at both, 4 GB is $24 at both and 8 GB is $48 at both. The differences that change a bill are further down the price list: what you pay for outbound traffic past the allowance, dedicated CPU, load balancers and managed databases. This page puts those lines side by side and then adds them up for five setups a US business actually runs.
Linode prices below come from Akamai's public Linode API price list and DigitalOcean prices from its Droplet and Managed Database pricing pages and billing docs, all read in October 2026. Figures are USD per month for US regions, before tax.

Is Linode cheaper than DigitalOcean?
For shared servers from 2 GB to 8 GB, no: Linode and DigitalOcean charge exactly the same, $12, $24 and $48 a month. Linode is cheaper on traffic overage (half DigitalOcean's rate), dedicated CPU, load balancers and the 1 GB entry server. DigitalOcean is slightly cheaper on managed databases and gives 8 vCPU instead of 6 on its 16 GB plan.
So the provider that costs less depends on the shape of your app. A typical PHP or Node app on a couple of shared servers will see a bill within a dollar either way. An app that pushes a lot of traffic, or one that needs dedicated cores, saves real money on Linode.
Linode vs DigitalOcean pricing for shared servers
| Memory | Linode Shared CPU | DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512 MB | Not offered | $4 (1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD, 500 GiB transfer) | DigitalOcean |
| 1 GB | $5 Nanode (1 vCPU, 25 GB, 1 TB) | $6 (1 vCPU, 25 GiB, 1,000 GiB) | Linode by $1 |
| 2 GB | $12 (1 vCPU, 50 GB, 2 TB) | $12 (1 vCPU, 50 GiB, 2,000 GiB) | Tie |
| 4 GB | $24 (2 vCPU, 80 GB, 4 TB) | $24 (2 vCPU, 80 GiB, 4,000 GiB) | Tie |
| 8 GB | $48 (4 vCPU, 160 GB, 5 TB) | $48 (4 vCPU, 160 GiB, 5,000 GiB) | Tie |
| 16 GB | $96 (6 vCPU, 320 GB, 8 TB) | $96 (8 vCPU, 320 GiB, 6,000 GiB) | Same price, DigitalOcean has more vCPU, Linode more transfer |
| 32 GB | $192 (8 vCPU, 640 GB, 16 TB) | Not in the Basic line; General Purpose 32 GB is $252 | Linode |
DigitalOcean also sells a 2 GB Droplet with 2 vCPU for $18, which has no direct Linode equivalent. If your app is CPU bound at 2 GB, that plan is worth a look before you jump to 4 GB.
Both providers bill by the hour or second up to the monthly cap. DigitalOcean moved Droplets to per second billing on 1 January 2026, with a 60 second minimum; Linode lists an hourly rate per plan, $0.018 an hour for the 2 GB plan.
Dedicated CPU, load balancers and managed databases
This is where the two lists stop matching.
| Line item | Linode | DigitalOcean |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated 2 vCPU, 4 GB | $36 (80 GB disk) | $42 CPU Optimized (25 GiB disk) |
| Dedicated 4 vCPU, 8 GB | $72 | $84 CPU Optimized |
| Load balancer | $10 NodeBalancer | $12 regional load balancer |
| Managed MySQL or PostgreSQL, 1 GB | $16 single node, $37 three nodes | $15.15 single node |
| Managed database, 2 GB | $32 | $30.45 |
| Managed database, 4 GB | $63 | $60.90 |
| Backups, 2 GB server | $2.50 | $2.40 weekly or $3.60 daily (20% or 30% of the Droplet) |
| Outbound traffic past the allowance | $0.005 per GB | $0.01 per GiB |
| Block storage | $0.10 per GB | Volumes, priced per GiB |
Both providers pool transfer allowances across servers, so a 4 GB server that barely sends anything donates its 4 TB to a busy neighbor. On Linode the pool is global for the core regions, which includes all ten US ones; a few newer regions such as Jakarta and Sao Paulo keep their own pool and charge more for servers. On DigitalOcean the pool is per team.
What a real setup costs on each
List prices only tell you so much. These are five setups we see often, priced with the figures above. The server panel or deploy tool you put on top is the same on both providers, so it is left out here and covered in the next section.
| Setup | Linode | DigitalOcean | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| One small app: 2 GB server with backups | $12 + $2.50 = $14.50 | $12 + $2.40 weekly = $14.40 | DigitalOcean by $0.10 |
| App plus managed database: 4 GB server with backups, 1 GB database | $24 + $5 + $16 = $45 | $24 + $4.80 + $15.15 = $43.95 | DigitalOcean by $1.05 |
| Two app servers behind a load balancer, 2 GB database, backups | $48 + $10 + $10 + $32 = $100 | $48 + $9.60 + $12 + $30.45 = $100.05 | Tie |
| Media heavy app: one 4 GB server sending about 10 TB a month | $24 + about 6 TB over at $0.005 = about $54 | $24 + about 6 TB over at $0.01 = about $84 | Linode by about $30 |
| CPU bound worker: dedicated 4 vCPU, 8 GB | $72 | $84 | Linode by $12 |
The pattern is clear. For an ordinary web app the two providers are within a dollar or two, and DigitalOcean's slightly cheaper managed database tips the small rows its way. Once traffic or dedicated cores dominate the bill, Linode pulls ahead, and on a video, download or image heavy site the overage gap alone can pay for a second server.
Which is better for a US business, Linode or DigitalOcean?
Pick on regions, traffic and the managed services you need, because price on ordinary servers is a wash. Linode has ten core US regions: Newark, two in Washington DC, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Fremont, Los Angeles and Seattle. DigitalOcean lists US data centers in New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Richmond, Kansas City and Memphis, though not every product is offered in each one.
If your customers sit in Texas, Florida, the Midwest or the Pacific Northwest, Linode's map gives you a closer region. If your app leans on managed services beyond a database, such as App Platform, Spaces or managed Kubernetes with a large community of tutorials behind it, DigitalOcean's catalog is wider and its docs are easier to search.
Clients in regulated industries will often ask for the provider's security and compliance reports before they sign. Both providers publish them on request, and it helps to keep your own controls and audit evidence organized so the hosting question does not stall the deal.
The cost that does not depend on the provider
A bare Linode or Droplet is an empty Ubuntu machine. Somebody still installs Nginx, PHP or Node, the database, Redis, a firewall, certificates and a process manager, and then repeats the work on the next server. That is the part of the bill most comparisons leave out, and it is the same on both providers.
A server panel takes that job over. Laravel Forge costs $12 to $39 a month and works with both providers. DeployManage costs more, $59 to $299 a month or half that billed yearly, and creates DigitalOcean servers through the DigitalOcean API while Linode servers join with one install command run as root. After that the two behave the same: the same stack on every server, sites deployed from GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket as atomic releases on Growth and Business, queue workers under Supervisor, and an activity log per team member.
That also makes the provider decision reversible. With the same stack on both, moving an app from a Droplet to a Linode is a new server, a database import and a DNS change, not a rebuild. Our Laravel Linode hosting and Linode control panel page covers the Linode side in detail, and Laravel DigitalOcean hosting covers the Droplet side.
When each provider is the cheaper choice
- Choose Linode if you push more than your pooled allowance each month, need dedicated vCPU, run a load balancer per environment, or want a US region in Dallas, Chicago, Miami or Seattle.
- Choose DigitalOcean if you want the $4 or the $18 two core Droplet, rely on managed databases at small sizes, or plan to use App Platform or Spaces alongside your servers.
- Either works for a normal PHP or Node app on 2 GB to 8 GB servers. Decide on regions and tooling, not price.
If Hetzner is also on your list, its US prices rose sharply in June 2026; the numbers are in our Hetzner vs DigitalOcean pricing comparison. For the full Droplet price list, see DigitalOcean pricing.

Get startedFrequently asked questions
Is Linode cheaper than DigitalOcean?
Only on some lines. Shared servers from 2 GB to 8 GB cost the same at both ($12, $24, $48). Linode is cheaper for the 1 GB server ($5 against $6), traffic overage, dedicated CPU and load balancers. DigitalOcean is slightly cheaper for small managed databases and offers a $4 server Linode does not.
Which is better, Linode or DigitalOcean?
For a typical PHP or Node app, neither wins on price, so decide on regions and services. Linode has ten US regions including Dallas, Chicago, Miami and Seattle. DigitalOcean has a wider catalog of managed services such as App Platform and Spaces and a very large library of tutorials.
How much does a Linode server cost per month?
Linode's shared plans cost $5 for 1 GB, $12 for 2 GB, $24 for 4 GB, $48 for 8 GB, $96 for 16 GB and $192 for 32 GB, with transfer included. Dedicated CPU starts at $36 for 2 vCPU and 4 GB. Backups add $2 to $40 a month depending on size.
Does DigitalOcean charge for bandwidth?
Each Droplet includes an outbound transfer allowance, from 500 GiB on the $4 plan to 6,000 GiB on the 16 GB plan, pooled across the team. Traffic beyond the pool costs $0.01 per GiB. Inbound traffic is free. Linode's overage rate is $0.005 per GB.
Is Linode the same as Akamai Cloud?
Yes. Akamai bought Linode in 2022 and now sells the service as Akamai Cloud, with linode.com redirecting to Akamai's pricing pages. The plans, API and Cloud Manager are still the Linode ones, and plan IDs such as g6-standard-2 are unchanged.
Can I manage Linode and DigitalOcean servers from one panel?
Yes. DeployManage creates DigitalOcean servers through the API and adds Linode servers with one install command, then installs the same stack on both and deploys sites as atomic releases. Growth is $129 a month for up to 10 servers, or $64 a month billed yearly.
